Bearsted, Marcus Samuel (Samuel, Marcus)
(1853-1927)
   English industrialist. In 1878 he founded companies in London and Japan. He began trans-porting oil to the Far East from Russia. In 1897 he founded the Shell Transport and Trading Company which amalgamated with the Royal Dutch Petroleum Company in 1901 to form the British-Dutch Oil Company. In 1921 he was granted a peerage.
